Storyline

A giant panda gave birth to a female cub on Friday in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Weighing 132 grams, the newborn cub is the second cub of the mother panda Zhaomei, who last gave birth to a male cub on August 19, 2019 in the center. So far this year, the base has successfully delivered four cubs.

Zhaomei was found to be in estrus on April 19 this year and through the help of experts at the base, it successfully mated with the male panda Abao.

Her amniotic fluid broke at around 20:03 on Friday, and gave birth to the cub 17 minutes later at 20:20. Both Zhaomei and her cub are now in good physical condition.

Zhaomei was rescued off a mountain in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan in May 2014 after it was badly injured and later discovered by a local villager herding his sheep.

Rescuers sent it to the base in Chengdu for better medical treatment, where it quickly recovered thanks to the care of experts at the base.
