Storyline

Chinese telecom carriers are working relentlessly to construct more 5G base stations in the country, aiming to achieve high-quality 5G signal coverage in not only urban areas, but rural and remote areas as well.

The four telecom carriers - China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom and China Broadcasting Network - have purchased a total of 722,000 5G base stations in 2021.

"China Mobile has purchased 700 MHz wireless devices for 480,000 5G base stations for itself and China Broadcasting Network upon commission. Now we have completed the procurement of main equipment. We plan to deploy over 700,000 5G base stations by the end of the year, achieving good 5G coverage in cities, counties, downtown areas, key towns and key areas," said Bian Yannan, deputy general manager of the planning and construction department at China Mobile.

This year, China Mobile and China Broadcasting Network have invested more than 58 billion yuan (about 8.92 billion U.S. dollars) in this 5G joint bidding. China Telecom and China Unicom invested 20 billion yuan.

"This year, China Telecom and China Unicom plan to deploy 320,000 5G base stations for shared use. China Telecom is responsible for constructing about 180,000 5G base stations. We hope to achieve high-quality 5G coverage in all Chinese counties and developed towns by the end of the year," said Zhu Manchang, deputy director of the procurement supply chain management center at China Telecom.

"We will deploy 200,000 5G base stations in the second half of the year. We will mainly use the 2.1 GHz low-frequency band to improve coverage in downtown areas and some key developed towns," said Miao Shouye, a senior executive at China Unicom.

The low-frequency band equipment for 5G base stations is the focus of the telecom carriers in inviting to bid. The high-frequency band 5G base stations have the advantages of high capacity and high bandwidth, which are suitable for populous urban areas. But the low-frequency band 5G base stations have advantages in wide coverage and low cost, which is fit for rural and remote areas.

"The focus of 5G network construction by Chinese telecom carriers has shifted from high bandwidth and high capacity to continuous coverage, a shift in 5G investment toward data, transmission and core network. It will make the development of 5G network healthier," said Cui Kai, assistant research director for Telecommunications and Internet of Things (IoT) Group at the International Data Corporation (IDC) in China.
