In the past 20 years, the terrorist forces in Afghanistan have not been eliminated but have been on the increase, and the Afghan people have been stuck in poverty and hardship instead of achieving development and dignity. They are more obligated than any other country to provide economic, livelihood and humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people."

Storyline

Afghanistan's neighboring countries including China, Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan convened the first meeting of foreign ministers on Wednesday via video link, signaling the establishment of the coordination and cooperation mechanism among Afghanistan's neighboring countries.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the meeting, which was chaired by Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and also attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov and Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Vepa Khadzhiev.

Wang stressed that the United States and its allies should learn profound lessons, reiterating that the United States and its allies are creators of the Afghan issue.

"We urge the United States and its allies should learn profound lessons and assume their due responsibilities. It can be said that the United States and its allies are creators of the Afghan issue. In the past 20 years, the terrorist forces in Afghanistan have not been eliminated but have been on the increase, and the Afghan people have been stuck in poverty and hardship instead of achieving development and dignity. They are more obligated than any other country to provide economic, livelihood and humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people," said Wang.

The Taliban has recently made positive statements on issues such as forming a government, fighting terrorism and making friends with its neighbors. The statements were welcomed, Wang pointed out, adding that the key is to transform statements into concrete action.

"We should guide and urge the Afghan Taliban to unite with all ethnic groups and factions, build a broad and inclusive political structure, pursue moderate and prudent domestic and foreign policies, draw a clear line with terrorist forces, and establish and develop friendly relations with other countries, especially neighboring countries," said Wang.

Afghanistan's neighbors should play a unique role in providing a good external environment for Afghanistan's stability and reconstruction and meanwhile addressing their own legitimate concerns, Wang said.

He proposed six aspects for coordination and cooperation at the current stage, including helping Afghanistan strengthen epidemic prevention and control, keeping port gates open, strengthening management of refugees and emigrants, providing humanitarian assistance as soon as possible, deepening anti-terrorism cooperation and carrying out anti-drug cooperation.

Wang announced that China has decided to urgently provide 200 million yuan (30.96 million U.S. dollars) worth of grain, winter supplies, vaccines and medicines to Afghanistan, according to the needs of the Afghan people.

"As one of the countries with the lowest vaccination rate of COVID-19, Afghanistan is at risk of a quicker spread of the virus. All parties may join hands and continue to provide anti-epidemic supplies and technical assistance to Afghanistan. China has decided to donate three million vaccine doses to the Afghan people in the first batch," said Wang.

Wang also suggested Afghanistan's neighboring countries to keep border reopen, enhance immigration and refugee control, provide humanitarian assistance as soon as possible, deepen counter-terrorism and security cooperation and carry out anti-drug cooperation.

Participants positively evaluated a series of consensuses reached at the meeting and agreed to institutionalize the meeting of foreign ministers of Afghanistan's neighboring countries.
