A Chinese envoy on Tuesday highlighted that wars, conflicts and regional turmoil are the main causes of large-scale human rights violations, saying that without peace and security, all human rights cannot be realized.

Delivering a joint statement on behalf of a group of countries at the 48th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Chen Xu, China's permanent representative to the UN Office at Geneva, highlighted that international peace and security currently face unprecedented challenges.

In his speech, he said that traditional and non-traditional security challenges are intertwined, and the realization of universal security remains a long and arduous task, making a serious impact on the universal enjoyment of human rights.

Chen urged the international community to increase efforts to protect human rights.

"To achieve lasting peace and to promote and protect human rights, all states should abide by the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, embrace the concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, and jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind," Chen said.

The Chinese envoy also stressed the importance of true multilateralism, urging all nations to promote dialogues, sustainable development and pay more attention to non-traditional security threats.

"First, we should practice true multilateralism, firmly uphold the UN-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law. We should respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, refrain from imposing one's will on others and work together to build a new type of international relations.
