Storyline

The cumulative total of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States exceeded 41.35 million as of Tuesday, with the death toll reaching 663,884, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Specifically, the country's case count rose to 41,351,744 as of 19:22 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on Tuesday, the CSSE tally showed.

The United States continues to lead the world in the numbers of both confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths.

The United States has up to date administered 379,574,298 vaccine doses, said the CSSE.

COVID-19 infections have risen "exponentially" among children in the United States in the past two weeks, said a report published Monday by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"After declining in early summer, child cases have increased exponentially with nearly 500,000 cases in the past two weeks," the report said.

As of Thursday, nearly 5.3 million children have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic, it said.

More than 243,000 child cases were added in the past week, the second highest number of child cases in a week since the pandemic began, it said.

For the week ending Thursday, the number of child cases accounted for 28.9 percent of all reported weekly COVID-19 cases, it said.

Severe cases of COVID-19 appear to be "uncommon" among children at the current stage, said the report, calling for an urgent need to collect more data on long-term impacts of the coronavirus on children, including its physical and mental health effects.

U.S. President Joe Biden announced new vaccine requirements on Thursday, including a mandate for businesses with more than 100 employees to require vaccination or regular testing for their employees.
