Storyline

Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng on Saturday met with Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Carrie Lam in Zhuhai City, south China's Guangdong Province.

Han, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, spoke highly of the law-based governance from the HKSAR government and its achievements in COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control, economic recovery, and relief of people's hardship. He also hoped that the SAR government will carry out the principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong" and well organize the following major elections in accordance with law.

Han said the central government firmly supports Hong Kong in consolidating its status as an international financial center and forging an international technology and innovation center, hoping that the SAR government will unite and lead all sectors of the Hong Kong society to continue to do a good job in pandemic prevention and control, plan for long-term development, improve people's well-being, and consolidate stability and progress.

The vice premier then said the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone in Guangdong's Shenzhen City is a major decision of China, which would later become a new highlight of reform and opening-up.

Han expected that the SAR government will seize the opportunities of building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, give a full play of Hong Kong's advantages, and make good use of the central government's supportive policies so as to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland.

Lam thanked the central government for its concern and support for Hong Kong. She said Hong Kong would well organize the elections, actively participate in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the development of Qianhai, and work for the better development of Hong Kong while integrating into the overall national development.
