Storyline

Various activities were held Saturday across China in commemoration of 90th anniversary of the September 18 Incident that marked the start of Japan's 14-year invasion of China.

On the evening of Sept 18, 1931, Japanese troops started a plotted bombardment of Chinese barracks near Shenyang under a false pretext, which marked the beginning of the bloody invasion of the northeast and then the rest of China by imperialist Japan that lasted 14 long years.

After the event, also known as the "Sept 18 Incident," China was dragged into a bitter war with Japan's fascist regime, which inflicted countless miseries and atrocities onto China.

The 1931-1945 Japanese invasion caused more than 35 million casualties among Chinese troops and civilians, accounting for one-third of the WWII casualties worldwide.

However, the incident also marked the start of the Chinese people's unrelenting resistance against the Japanese, which formed an important part of the global fight against fascists during World War II.

During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, China fought with two-thirds of Japan's army, making a major contribution to the allied victory in WWII.

For years, China has kept marking the September 18 Incident.

In Panshi City of northeast China's Jilin Province, representatives from all walks of life participated in a memorial event held in the city, with wreaths being laid at the memorial monument of General Yang Jingyu, a military commander who died in his battle against Japanese invaders in 1940.

"As a famous general in the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army, my great-grandfather followed through the noble beliefs of a Chinese soldier and member of the Communist Party of China for his whole life. The great spirit of resisting Japanese aggression is worthy of learning by all of us," said Ma Chengming, great-grandson of General Yang Jingyu.

At the Memorial Hall of Victims of Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders in Nanjing City of east China's Jiangsu Province, representatives of families of the Nanjing Massacre survivors struck the Big Bell of Peace.

"Never should any of us forget this history of humiliation of our nation. We should make arduous efforts to reinvigorate the country. A powerful country is made up of strong people," said Jin Zhihui, a descendant of a Nanjing Massacre survivor.

At the Memorial Hall of the Eighth Route Army's Lanzhou Office in northwest China's Gansu Province, special exhibitions related to the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression were held as well.

"Participating in such an event has made us realize that the life we are living now is hard-won. There were people back then who really shed blood and made the ultimate sacrifices so that we could have the life we're having today," said Sun Yan, a local resident.

The Chinese army also held all kinds of commemorative activities, in which soldiers learned about the bravery and sacrifice of their predecessors in the battles against the Japanese invaders.

"By holding commemorative activities in our trainings, we want to remind soldiers to remember that part of history with bloody battles, to be prepared to fight at any time and fulfill the sacred mission of safeguarding our motherland," said Zhang Pengyuan, political instructor of a brigade under the 77th Army Group of the People's Liberation Army Ground Force.
