China has donated a batch of COVID-19 vaccines to the United Nations (UN) peacekeepers.
A vaccine delivery ceremony was held via video link on Friday, attended by Vice Chairman of China International Development Cooperation Agency Zhang Maoyu, Assistant Secretary-General of the UN for Supply Chain Management Christian Francis Saunders, Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang, and delegates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinopharm.
Zhang said that the donated COVID-19 vaccines are intended to protect the UN peacekeepers' safety and health so that they can better fulfill the duties. Vaccine distribution will prioritize UN peacekeepers stationed in Africa.
"This is a concrete stop by China to implement President Xi Jinping's important pledge of making Chinese vaccines a global public good. The donation fully demonstrates China's support for multilateralism and the UN, as well as our concern for the health and safety of peacekeepers," said Zhang.
Sanders expressed gratitude for China's donation, saying that the vaccines will be distributed to the peacekeepers and partners on the front lines through the UN vaccine program.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, China has initiated the largest emergency humanitarian aid scheme since 1949. To increase the availability and affordability of COVID-19 vaccines in developing countries, China has provided vaccine assistance to 106 countries and four international organizations, exporting over 1.2 billion doses of vaccines to more than 60 countries, the most in the world.
