If we achieve that this week, then the second part of COP, we know it will be a smooth road."

Storyline

China is playing a key leadership role in pushing forward action-orientated plans under the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, with the country having set a strong example with its conservation protection efforts, according to Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, executive secretary of the secretariat of United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD).

China is currently hosting the first part of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Kunming City of southwest China's Yunnan Province set to run between October 11 and 15.

COP15 is very significant, as it will work for the conclusion of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, and identify targets and pathways for global biodiversity protection in the future.

Over 5,000 representatives from government, international organizations, research institutions, and enterprises are attending COP15, which is the first global conference convened by the UN to highlight ecological civilization, a philosophy proposed by China.

In an interview with China Media Group, Mrema noted that the meeting offers a great opportunity for global leaders to make their voices heard on all important subjects of biodiversity.

"This week, we are going to listen and hear the voices of the leaders globally. Probably at the leaders summit, we might hear the voices of the leaders. At the ministerial round-tables, we will hear the voices of over a hundred ministers from over a hundred countries, so their voices, we hope we hear the commitments they are making to make us move forward. Those commitments are what we push positively the negotiations going on on the post-2020 global framework," said Mrema.

"Two, China has taken up the leadership as the president of the COP, and China is now going to lead the world to the second part of the Conference of the Parties, so that again will be critical to see that China's leadership, both politically, but also in leading the negotiations in galvaniting all countries globally to really accept that action-oriented, tangible, achievable, transformative post-2020 global biodiversity framework. If we achieve that this week, then the second part of COP, we know it will be a smooth road," she added.

In addition, Mrema said that China's restoration efforts over recent decades clearly represent a good model for future work, which other countries can emulate and learn from.

"First, China taking over the presidency of the Conference of the Parties, it means now China has that leadership role in the biodiversity agenda globally. Because now China becomes very important as we go into our next part of this COP15, and fortunately, China has achieved a lot as far as biodiversity conservation protection is concerned. Threatened species, you had species here in China which were almost going to extinction. In fact, in the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, they were in the threatened species. As we speak they have 'graduated', if I may use the word, or promoted, from threatened species to just vulnerable," she said.

Among the 196 parties to the CBD, the United States is one that has not ratified the treaty 30 years after signing, and has not announced plans to ratify it.

"As far as the Convention on Biological Diversity is concerned, we already say it's a universal, international legally-binding treaty. The two countries which are not yet parties to it, I can tell you at national level a lot is happening for biodiversity conservation, because biodiversity does not know borders and biodiversity also has an impact across borders," she said.
