A deadly fire in a commercial and residential building early Thursday in southern Taiwan's Kaohsiung City has caused 46 people dead and 41 more injured, according to the local fire bureau.
After 13-hour efforts of fire extinction and rescue, the search work at the scene has been concluded.
The Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits expressed deep condolences over the loss of lives in the fire and sincere sympathy to the injured compatriots and the family members involved in the accident.
Around 120 households live in the 12-floor building, most of them are senior residents who live alone.
Kaohsiung Fire Bureau dispatched 75 fire vehicles and 159 firefighters to conduct the rescue. It was very difficult to perform rescue efforts as the fire was fierce and things piled up in the indoor spaces. At around 4:50 local time, the fire was controlled, but there were still people trapped in the corner of the top floor.
The explosion is probably caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette which then ignited gas, but the specific cause is under further investigation, said the local fire bureau.
