2. SOUNDBITE (English) Henry Alfred Kissinger, former U.S. secretary of state and national security advisor:
"What is unique in our period is that there is no longer an isolated region, that regions can affect each other by their efforts, but also by their neglect. And there are aspects to modern technology, which would have seemed inconceivable, if not bizarre, in the period in 100 years ago. So our period faces grave dangers, but also tremendous opportunities. Fifty years from now, when we look back to this evening, and say that this was the beginning of a great opportunity. And in the 50 years that I've had the honor of becoming familiar with the Chinese people, they have certainly contributed in an astounding way. Nobody at the beginning of the relationship could imagine the extent to which China would be an integral, indispensable and essential part of the international system, and especially in the international economic system. What is now before us is a next stage, namely to understand that it is not possible to go through this road alone. And that constant competition will produce such a sense of discrimination and confrontation that some seemingly minor event can get out of control. So, how do we retain the national dignity and the national objective and the human community that is threatened by conflicts that are unnecessary? And in some ways, it's caused by neglect, I did see major problems (major of that)of our government at this point."
