Storyline

Astronauts Zhai Zhigang and Wang Yaping have completed their extravehicular activities (EVAs) and returned to the space station core module Tianhe, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said on early hours of Monday.

This was the third extravehicular mission conducted during the construction of the country's space station and the first by the Shenzhou-13 crew.

It marks the first EVAs in Chinese space history involving a woman astronaut, said the agency, which has declared Monday's EVAs a complete success.

Zhai and Wang entered the node module at 16:30 Sunday and astronaut Ye Guangfu stayed inside the Tianhe core module to support the other two as they were conducting their EVAs.

Zhai opened the exit door of node module at 18:51. This is the second time for Zhai to perform the EVAs after completing China's first spacewalk 13 years ago during the Shenzhou-7 mission.

Zhai installed the foot stoppers and then performed the EVAs under the assistance of robotic arm.

Wang got out of the node module of Tianhe core module at 20:28, becoming China's first woman astronaut to perform EVAs.

The ground control center and the Shenzhou-13 crew cooperated closely in installing a suspension device and transfer connectors to the robotic arm.

"The device installed this time is mainly used for connecting the upper and lower parts of the robotic arm. We made this to prepare for the two parts to carry out combined operation. After being connected, the two parts can form a 15-meter-long robotic arm, which will have a wider working range," said Tang Zixin, monitor of the robotic arm engineering of the space station system at the China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

"This time, the Tianhe core module has two cargo crafts docked at the two ends and a manned spacecraft docked radially. The whole structure has changed a lot. Therefore, to prepare for the EVAs, we made special adjustment involving the flying attitude, solar wings, and tilt angle of communication antenna. The core module's flying attitude was especially designed for this time's EVAs. The operation was very precise and accurate," said Zhu Guangchen, deputy chief designer of the space station system at the China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

The two returned to the core module at 01:16 Monday (Beijing Time) after 6.5 hours of extravehicular activities.

"China's first spacewalker and the first woman spacewalker worked together to complete this extravehicular mission. Both performed outstandingly. We will accumulate more experience from the EVAs, laying the technical foundation for future tasks," said Huang Weifen, chief designer of the astronaut system of China's manned space program.

The mission further tested the functions of the China-developed new-generation extravehicular spacesuits, the coordination between the astronauts and the mechanical arm, and the reliability and safety of supporting equipment related to the EVAs, the CMSA noted.

China launched the Shenzhou-13 spaceship on Oct. 16, sending three astronauts on a six-month mission to construct the space station.
