Storyline

China has taken various measures to ensure the production and marketing of agricultural products, continuously improving its capacity to support agriculture and benefit farmers.

China is the world's largest cotton consumer and second largest cotton producer. The supply and marketing cooperative system is the main market channel of China's cotton industry, accounting for more than half of the market share.

Northwest China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region has rolled out preferential policies, encouraging cotton farmers to use modern agricultural machinery to boost the development of the industry in recent years.

Yuli County has over 66,000 hectares of cotton fields. It is a major production base of premium cotton in China.

At present, mechanized harvesters are used for over 96 percent of the cotton fields in Yuli. Increased land transfers have enabled large-scale farming, making it more cost-effective and efficient.

"The yield per mu (1/15 hectare) is 70-80 kg higher than in previous years, and the harvest is very good this year," said Jin Jianfei, a cotton farmer in Yuli County.

Different from the traditional cotton farming and management, the cotton here is cultivated strictly in accordance with the requirements of the "China Cotton Production Management Standards", and the whole process is recorded, covering seed selection, fertilization and agronomic operations.

"The China Cotton Association has issued the China Cotton Production Management Standards, covering the whole industry chain of cotton and textile. We hope to promote the high-quality and sustainable development of China's cotton industry through the implementation of the sustainable cotton development project," said Wang Jianhong, vice president of the China Cotton Association.

Now each cotton bale has a unique "ID card" - the barcode of the cotton quality traceability system.

"The barcode of cotton bales contains the date of delivery, enterprise code, name, delivery method, information of cotton farmers, etc., which will be uploaded to the big data platform of the national cotton trading market," said Ji Bo, a regional manager of the national cotton trading market.

In terms of the trading market, according to the analysis of the monitoring data of the China Cotton Association, orders from large and medium-sized textile enterprises are abundant, which leads to an increase in cotton consumption. The national cotton consumption of the 2020-2021 period is 8.1 million tons, an increase of 5.9 percent compared with the previous yearly period.

The cotton harvest will be basically completed in mid-November, and the total cotton output this year will remain around 5.9 million tons, which ensures stable cotton supply.

Meanwhile, with the support of the Ministry of Finance and the National Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives, China Supply and Marketing Group has invested more than 100 million yuan (about 15.65 million U.S. dollars) to build the China West Coast Agricultural Wholesale Market in Qingdao City, east China's Shandong Province, so as to form a farm product supply chain system. The market has helped more than 20,000 local farmers and fishermen to increase their incomes.

More than 120 cold storage units have been put into use in the whole market. These cold storage units received one-million-yuan subsidies thanks to the industrial revitalization policies of Qingdao West Coast New Area, and the market place gave all these subsidies to merchants.

Qingdao has implemented digital modularization management for each agricultural product to timely deal with abnormal price fluctuations.

"[We are carrying out] food safety supervision and monitoring to achieve full traceability," said Zhang Lujin, head of the China West Coast Agricultural Wholesale Market.

At present, there are over 1,300 wholesale markets for agricultural products in the supply and marketing cooperative system nationwide, and a number of major specialized wholesale markets for agricultural products have been established in Shandong, Jiangsu, Jiangxi provinces and other coastal and riverside areas.

In the first three quarters of this year, the transaction volume of wholesale agricultural products in China's supply and marketing cooperative system reached 625.4 billion yuan, up 14.5 percent year on year, showing the system's enhanced ability to serve farmers.
