"China is closely monitoring the latest developments in the Solomon Islands. We support the local government's efforts to end violence and chaos. We are confident that under Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare's leadership, the government of the Solomon Islands can restore social order and stability soon. We are gravely concerned over the attacks on Chinese citizens and Chinese-funded enterprises, and have asked the local government to take all measures necessary to protect the safety of Chinese nationals and institutions."

"The one-China principle is a basic norm governing international relations. Over the past two years or so since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the Solomon Islands, bilateral relations have enjoyed sound development with fruitful outcomes in various areas including economy, trade, infrastructure, education and health, delivering tangible benefits and welfare to people in both countries. All attempts to disrupt the normal development of relations between China and the Solomon Islands are just futile."

China is gravely concerned over the attacks on Chinese citizens and Chinese-funded enterprises in the Solomon Islands supports the local government's efforts to end the current violence and chaos, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman on Thursday.
Over 1,000 rioters started to protest in the capital city of Honiara, the Solomon Islands on Wednesday, demanding Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare resign.
The parliament building and stores owned by Chinese nationals were burnt down in the unrest.
According to reports, most of the rioters were from Malaita Province, the most populous and one of the largest of the nine provinces of the pacific island nation, which showed support to "independence forces" from China's Taiwan Province.

We are confident that under Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare's leadership, the government of the Solomon Islands can restore social order and stability soon. Ignoring the curfew order imposed by the government on Wednesday, the rioters continued to rock the capital city and the local police authorities had to respond with tear gas to disperse the mob.
Two days of rioting has left the capital ablaze and many police officers injured.
Sogavare said the involved rioters will be held accountable.
