Storyline

A six-storey parliament building, constructed by China's Shanghai Construction Group, is nearing completion in Zimbabwe, which is set to replace the 100-seat structure used by lawmakers of the country.
The new parliament building in Zimbabwe has a capacity of 650 seats. And on top of this, it will have extra conferencing facilities and larger spaces for offices and parking.

The structure is part of a larger infrastructure project that includes the construction of a new city in Mount Hampden, on the outskirts of the capital Harare City.

The project has been run through local partnerships, which has also enabled local workers to benefit from the knowledge and skills transfer.

"We have hired local construction technicians. They have formed a good pair with us and also been our very good helpers. In this process, we've imparted construction technical knowledge and construction skills, allowing many local workers to improve their labor skills," said Cai Libo, manager of the Zimbabwean parliament building project under Shanghai Construction Group.

"You know Chinese, they are skillful, so we learn a lot practically, intelligence. We've learned a lot since we started to work here. And now, even after finishing this project, we are now able to do even something which is constructive even to a very big project, but because we learn from this project. So I can say, we learn a lot," said Gilbert Maorede, a local worker.

The parliament building is projected to be completed early next year and will be handed over to Zimbabwean officials by April.
