The China-Laos Railway connects the Belt and Road Initiative with Laos' strategy to convert itself from a land-locked country to a land-linked hub, said Laos Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh during a ride on the railway's first train on Friday.
The 1,035-kilometer, electric powered, passenger and freight railway, which connects Kunming and Vientiane, has two sections and fully adopted Chinese technical standards.
Work on the Boten-Vientiane section started in December 2016 and the Yuxi-Mohan section in China started in December 2015.
A trip from Kunming to Vientiane takes only around 10 hours.
