Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed upholding the principle of developing religions in the Chinese context and providing active guidance for the adaptation of religions to socialist society.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks while addressing a national conference on work related to religious affairs held in Beijing from Friday to Saturday.

Xi called for improving self-management of religious groups, and improving law-based governance of religious affairs to open up new prospects in religious work, and better guide believers to work with the general public to build China into a great modern socialist country.

Noting that the CPC Central Committee attaches great importance to the religious work, Xi said that since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, Party committees at all levels have made innovative progress in the Party's religious work while implementing the decisions and plans of the Central Committee, with the legal and policy framework for religious work witnessing further improvement.

Xi stressed the importance of fully, accurately and comprehensively implementing the Party's policy on freedom of religious belief, respecting people's religious beliefs, managing religious affairs in accordance with the law, adhering to the principle of independence and self-management, and actively guiding religions to adapt to socialist society.

Believers and non-believers share the same fundamental political and economic interests, and both are the mass basis for the Party's governance, he noted, adding that the Party and state should provide necessary support for religious groups, which are a bridge to unite religious figures and the broad masses of religious believers.

Xi stressed the need to further adapt religions in China to the Chinese context, guide and support religious practices in the country to follow the guidance of core socialist values, and enhance religious believers' recognition of the Chinese nation, Chinese culture, the Communist Party of China and socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Xi said the religious circle should be encouraged to strengthen self-education and self-management, comprehensively govern religion with strict discipline, and take the lead in abiding by laws and improving religious practice.

He also stressed the need to cultivate a group of Party and government officials who are both proficient in Marxist religious views and familiar with religious work, as well as religious representatives who are politically reliable, religiously accomplished, and morally able to serve the public and play an important role in the religious work.
