We have a lot of challenges, but we need to stay focused. We need to focus on the livelihood issues and also the economic issues."

Hong Kong's new electoral system will enable more efficient operations for the legislative council to work out solutions for the betterment of people's livelihood, said the city's Legislative Council (LegCo) President Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen in an interview Friday.
The seventh-term Legislative Council (LegCo) elections of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) kicked off Sunday morning, the first since the improvement to the HKSAR electoral system.
The membership of the seventh term of the HKSAR LegCo will increase from 70 to 90, and the members are to be elected by the Election Committee constituency (40 seats), functional constituencies (30 seats), and geographical constituencies (20 seats), respectively.
Speaking with China Global Television Network (CGTN) ahead of the election, Leung said the overhauled electoral system can bring in experience from different sectors and incorporate the voice of people from different walks of life.
"The new system brings a lot of people who have the hearts for Hong Kong and they bring in experience from different sectors. They can be professors, senior professionals, but they also represent the different strata of people. Then they bring in voices from the people," said the LegCo president.
He underlined livelihood and economic issues as the focus of governance to steer Hong Kong's development.

We have the Northern Metropolis, which is new and to me is the future of Hong Kong. How we can develop it for the high-tech industries working together with the rest of China? We have a lot of challenges, but we need to stay focused. We need to focus on the livelihood issues and also the economic issues," he said.
Under the new electoral system, legislators can sit down and work together for pragmatic solutions to problems facing the region, especially those regarding people's livelihood, noted the president.
