Storyline

A new type of smart bullet trains known as intelligent electric multiple unit (EMU) specially serving the 2022 Winter Olympics made its debut last week and will run on the high-speed railway between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, the co-host city of the Games in north China's Hebei Province.

Specially tailored for the 2022 Winter Olympics, the EMU has made a number of major technological breakthroughs, its chief designer said.

The eight-car EMU train has a capacity of 564 people, and is divided into business class, first class, second class and media studio.

"It applies autopilot at a speed of 350 km per hour in operation with passengers on board for the first time. It is also the first autopilot case in the world at the speed of 350km per hour on a main line of high-speed railway," said Zhu Yan, chief designer of the Winter Olympics intelligent EMU project carried out by the CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd.

The train also has a special working area for media, where journalists could edit and record programs on the running train, and transmit the audio and video data real-time to their home countries or regions via the network.

"That means we've built an information highway on the train, with the outstanding features of broad bandwidth and low latency. The special carriage for the media is equipped with 5G Wi-Fi network, enabling media workers from around the world to work conveniently in this carriage," Zhu said.

To reduce dynamic resistance and energy consumption, the entire intelligent EMU train adopts a lightweight design.

Taking the shape of the locomotive as an example, the design team tested 42 sets of schemes and decided on a bionic design in the shape of the falcon.

"In this way, its comprehensive energy consumption is lowered by more than 10 percent. In other words, we can save about 1.8 million kwh of electricity after running this train for one year. Energy-saving also reflects the concept of Green Olympics," Zhu said.
