The situation in Burkina Faso appears to have stabilized after military forces seized power on Monday, with operations being resumed at the Ouagadougou Airport and the streets of the capital city bustling with traffic as people go about their daily business again.
Businesses have reopened along the main streets and commercial districts of Ouagadougou, with pedestrians reappearing in busy areas. At intersections, traffic police are maintaining order, guiding flocks of people who commute on motorcycles. Although a curfew policy remains in place, the impact of the coup upon business and life seems to have largely subsided.
Military forces said on Thursday that security remains Burkina Faso's top priority, and they have begun consultations with all parties with a view to restoring long-term peace.
On Monday, Burkina Faso soldiers said on national television that they had seized power and ousted the authority of President Roch Kabore, who was blamed for failing to contain worsening violence by Islamist militants. The Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration took power, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.
