In-person classes at kindergartens, primary and middle schools and secondary vocational schools across Beijing will be suspended for a week from May 5 to 11 as the Chinese capital races to contain clusters of local COVID-19 cases that have popped up in recent days, according to local health officials on Tuesday.
Beijing registered 32 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases from 0:00 to 15:00 on Tuesday, the health officials told a press briefing.
From April 22 to 15:00 on Tuesday, the cumulative case count in Beijing reached 453, covering 14 districts.
"As we speak, there are still some hidden sources of sporadic COVID-19 infections at the community level across Beijing. It is necessary to speed up district screening, timely tighten control, prevent virus spillover between districts, and resolutely stem the spread of the epidemic," said Pang Xinghuo, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Center for Disease Prevention and Control.
"After the May Day holiday, primary and secondary schools, kindergartens and secondary vocational schools in the city will suspend in-person classes for one week, which will last from May 5 to 11. The city on Tuesday added two areas to its list of local places deemed high risk for COVID-19 after multiple infections were reported there.
So far, the Chinese capital has had 12 high-risk areas and 34 medium-risk areas in the latest COVID-19 resurgence.
