A memorial ceremony was held on Saturday in Serbia's capital Belgrade to mourn the deaths of three Chinese journalists who were killed in the NATO bombing of the former Chinese embassy in 1999.

Both Serbian and Chinese officials, representative of Chinese institutions as well as Serbian veterans attended the event.

Among the officials present at the commemoration were Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin, Minister of Labor, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Darija Kisic Tepavcevic, and Tian Yishu, Charge d'affaires of the Chinese embassy in Serbia.

"The aggression conducted by NATO at the end of the 20th century was a monstrous crime done to our country and our people. It was a barbaric act of international law. Until now, NATO still hasn't been punished; however, this doesn't mean that there will be no punishment. Serbia will never forget and will never stop asking for responsibility for crimes conducted by NATO. Serbia and China have a friendship made of steel. Our friendship is forged in the most difficult of times," said Vulin.

"Every year at this time for the past 23 years, we mourned our friends. They stood by us during the most difficult time of Serbia and sacrificed their precious lives," Tepavcevic noted.

Mourners who took part in the commemoration said that they will never forget the friendship made with fresh blood during the difficult times.

"Over the years, the Journalists' Association of Serbia have come and commemorated the old friends, which has been a fixed tradition for us," said a Serbian veteran.

On May 7, 1999, U.S.-led NATO forces carried out a barbaric missile attack on the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, which left three journalists dead, more than 20 people injured, and the embassy building severely damaged. The three victims of the deadly bombing were journalists Shao Yunhuan of Xinhua News Agency, and Xu Xinghu and his wife Zhu Ying of the Guangming Daily newspaper.
