Storyline

Russia held a military parade on Monday in Moscow's Red Square to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II (WWII).

During a speech at the parade, Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed the Soviet Union's triumph over Nazi Germany calling it an 'unprecedented feat of heroism'. He said that Russia must ensure the "horror of a global war must never be repeated".

Putin said that Russia is proud of the generation of unconquered, bold victors and highlighted the responsibility to remember those who contributed to defeating Nazism.

Around 11,000 participants, including officers and soldiers from different services and military cadets, made up 33 formations that participated in the Red Square parade.

Artillery, rocket launchers, missile launchers and other military pieces were paraded at the event, including T-34 tanks that was a bulwark of the victory over Nazi Germany

Victory Day parades were held in 27 other cities across Russia, including in Saint Petersburg.

Around 65,000 participants, including officers and soldiers from Russia’s five military districts and trainees from military schools, took part in the nationwide parades.

The Victory Day parade was first held in Red Square on June 24, 1945. Since 1995, Russia has held the parade annually on May 9. In 2020, the parade was postponed to June 24 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
