Thousands of people gathered in East Jerusalem on Friday for a funeral march honoring late Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh who was fatally shot on Wednesday while covering a gun battle between Israeli soldiers and militants in the occupied West Bank.
Born in Jerusalem, the Palestinian-American reported for decades on the conflict and political developments of Israel and Jerusalem. Her understanding of the complexities inherent to the long-running Palestinian-Israeli conflict inspired acclaim and a following, particularly among women.
"I used to watch her when I was a little girl. We used to watch this powerful woman on the TV defending Gaza, trying to show the world the obvious truth and we appreciate her," said a female funeral attendee.
However, Israeli forces tried to forcefully prevented the march, resulting a clash between the police and mourners. Six people were arrested.
Abu Akleh's death has sent shockwaves around the world and has generated fierce debates over who fired the fatal shot.
In the immediate aftermath, Israel's government blamed Palestinian militants. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that based on initial findings, it's possible that the journalist was hit by the armed Palestinians.
But the Palestinian Authority, eyewitnesses and an independent NGO investigation have refuted that claim.
Officials from the Al Jazeera network also accused Israel of deliberately killing the veteran journalist, while Israeli authorities initially claimed she was hit by indiscriminate gunfire from Palestinian militants.
According to international press organizations estimates, nearly all journalists injured or killed in recent years by bullets, stun grenades and tear gas fired by Israel's army, border police and police, are Palestinian.
The United Nations and European Union have called for an independent investigation into Abu Akleh's killing. Israel has offered a joint investigation with the Palestinian Authority, which the latter rejected.
