The Macao Light Rail Transit's Hengqin Line, a light rail route connecting Macao Special Administrative Region and neighboring Guangdong-Macao cooperation zone, started construction on Wednesday in Zhuhai.

Macao's largest shield tunneling machine Aoqin No.1 has been put into operation in the tunnel construction on Wednesday.

The line, with an overall length of 2.2 kilometers, starts from an elevated station in Macao and arrives at an underground station located in front of Hengqin Port.

The line is a priority item of public infrastructure for the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland in 2024. It will enhance the regional cooperation among Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), helping Macao to be included in the "one-hour living circle" in the GBA.

Hengqin is an island in Zhuhai City, a prefecture-level city and special economic zone in Guangdong.
