"President Xi Jinping has stressed in his telephone conversation with President Biden that the position of the Chinese government and people on the Taiwan question is consistent, and resolutely safeguarding China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the firm will of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people. The public opinion cannot be defied. Those who play with fire will perish by it. We believe the U.S. has full knowledge of the strong and clear message sent by China."

5. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Zhao Lijian, spokesman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"If Speaker Pelosi visits Taiwan, it would grossly interfere in China's internal affairs, seriously undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, wantonly trample on the 'one-China principle', seriously threaten the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and severely damage China-U.S. relations. It will only lead to very grave situation and consequences."

7. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Zhao Lijian, spokesman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"We would like to warn the U.S. again that China is fully prepared for any eventuality. The Chinese People's Liberation Army will not sit back. China will surely make resolute response and take strong countermeasures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. What the U.S. should do is to abide by the one-China principle and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, follow through on President Biden's commitment of not supporting Taiwan secessionist attempts, and not to arrange any Taiwan visit by Speaker Pelosi."

Storyline

Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) will not sit back if U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian warned on Monday.

Pelosi has started her planned Asia trip with no clear mention of a Taiwan stop.

When asked to comment on Pelosi's possible Taiwan visit, Zhao said China has repeatedly made clear to the U.S. side its serious concern over and firm opposition to the visit.

We believe the U.S. has full knowledge of the strong and clear message sent by China," Zhao said at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

"If Speaker Pelosi visits Taiwan, it would grossly interfere in China's internal affairs, seriously undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, wantonly trample on the 'one-China principle', seriously threaten the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and severely damage China-U.S. relations. It will only lead to very grave situation and consequences," said the spokesman.

Zhao once again warned of strong countermeasures against the potential visit.

"We would like to warn the U.S. again that China is fully prepared for any eventuality. The Chinese People's Liberation Army will not sit back. China will surely make resolute response and take strong countermeasures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. What the U.S. should do is to abide by the one-China principle and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, follow through on President Biden's commitment of not supporting Taiwan secessionist attempts, and not to arrange any Taiwan visit by Speaker Pelosi," he said.
