The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) on Friday reiterated its support for the one-China principle, said a UN spokesman in response to U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to China's Taiwan region.
"We go by the official policy of the United Nations on this issue, which is that we are guided by the General Assembly Resolution 2758 from 1971, recognizing one China," said Rheal LeBlanc, chief of the Press and External Relations Section at the United Nations Information Service in Geneva.
President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Abdulla Shahid reiterated on Thursday that the UNGA abides by the Resolution 2758.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday affirmed the world body's one-China principle as Pelosi's Taiwan visit has created tensions.
The UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 in 1971, which decides to restore the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in the UN and to recognize the representatives of the PRC government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations.
