Storyline

China's logistics sector registered steady growth from January to August as supportive policies were implemented, according to the data released by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing (CFLP) on Thursday.

Social logistics rose 3.2 percent year on year in the first eight months to 216.4 trillion yuan (about 30.08 trillion U.S. dollars), said the CFLP. The growth rate of social logistics was 0.1 percentage point higher than that of the first seven months.

The volume of social logistics in August grew 3.9 percent, 0.6 percentage points higher than that in July.

The federation indicates that the growth was thanks to the country's policies in stabilizing industrial and supply chains and supporting key areas, and logistics demand in production and consumption has picked up significantly.

Specifically, the total volume of logistics of the industrial product sector increased by 3.6 percent year on year from January to August, 0.1 percentage points higher than that of January to July.

In addition, in August, the volume of logistics of the industrial product sector grew 4.2 percent, 0.4 percentage points higher from the previous month.

The logistics of manufacturing sector registered a strong recovery during the period, with demand of automobile increased significantly.

Logistics demand for automobile manufacturing rose more than 30 percent year-on-year in August.

"The long industrial chain of the automobile industry has maintained a continuous recovery, which plays an active role in driving the development of the upstream and downstream of logistics. This shows that logistics has a better performance in stabilizing the complex supply and industrial chains," said Liu Yuhang, director of the China Logistics Information Center.

The import logistics of bulk commodities increased compared with the previous period, said the CFLP.

From January to August, the drop of import logistics of iron ore and coal narrowed by 0.3 and 3.3 percentage points respectively compared with that of the January-July period. The growth of import in the consumption of livelihood sector was accelerated.

Meanwhile, from January to August, the total volume of logistics on unit and household goods increased by 2.8 percent year on year. And the number of that was 3.0 percent in August alone.

Among them, logistics of e-commerce is flourishing, with rapid growth registered in courier sector.

"As a manufacturing giant, China needs logistics to support its production of raw materials and sales of products. Meanwhile, China has a large volume of consumption, and the well-developed e-commerce economy also needs the support of logistics. The logistics industry has played a crucial role in stabilizing the economy, and safeguarding industrial and supply chains," said Hua Guowei, professor of economics and management at Beijing Jiaotong University.

According to the CFLP, the total revenue of the logistics industry reached 8.2 trillion yuan (about 1.14 trillion U.S. dollars) from January to August, an increase of 5.8 percent year on year.

The total revenue has maintained a steady and fast growth with a growth rate higher than that of the social logistics, which shows that the supply of logistics basically meets the changes in demand, said the CFLP.
