China and Argentina have set a good example of cooperation and solidarity among the world's emerging markets through an enduring friendship and steadily expanding exchanges, according to a China Media Group (CMG) commentary published on Thursday.
A translated version of the commentary is as follows:
Over the past half a century, bilateral relations between China and Argentina have stood the test of changing international circumstances and become an example of solidarity, cooperation and common development among emerging markets and developing countries, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a congratulatory letter to the High-level Forum on China-Argentina Cultural Exchanges on Wednesday.
Xi said the comprehensive and rapid development of bilateral ties reflects the vitality of China-Latin America relations, hoping the participants will pool their wisdom and build consensus to help write a new chapter in the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for China and Latin America and mankind in the new era.
In his letter to the forum, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez also expressed his confidence in embracing a community of shared future with a higher level of development.
2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. It is also the Year of China-Argentina Friendship and Cooperation.
The two countries' heads of state both sending congratulatory letters to the High-level Forum on China-Argentina Cultural Exchanges fully reflects the high importance the two leaders attach to China-Argentina cooperation in the new era, and their goal of deepening the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership and promoting bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges and cooperation.
The past 50 years has witnessed China and Argentina from being friends far away from each other to becoming comprehensive strategic partners to each other, which not only has brought solid benefits to the two peoples, but has also demonstrated that a mutually beneficial and fruitful relationship can be achieved between countries.
The foundation of solidarity, cooperation and common development between the two sides lies in the mutual firm support for each other's sovereignty-related interests. In this February's Joint Statement on Deepening China-Argentina Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Argentina reiterated its adherence to the one-China principle, and China reaffirmed its support for Argentina's demand for the full exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands.
On the economic front, the healthy and stable development of China-Argentina economic and trade relations has greatly benefited the peoples of both sides. In 2021, the bilateral trade volume between China and Argentina increased by 28.3 percent year on year to 17.83 billion U.S. dollars. China remains Argentina's second largest trading partner.
In February this year, China and Argentina signed more than a dozen documents including a memorandum of understanding on the joint development of the Belt and Road Initiative. These cooperation documents cover a wide range of fields including agriculture, digital economy and green development.
With the advancement of Belt and Road development, China and Argentina are further consolidating the foundation of cooperation and injecting more impetus into solving development challenges.
Take the Santa Cruz River for an instance. The two countries are jointly building a hydropower station with an average annual power generation of 4.95 billion kWh, which is expected to save Argentina nearly 1.1 billion U.S. dollars in oil and gas import expenses each year.
For China and Argentina, two old friends who have stood with each other for five decades, mutual learning between civilizations and the bonds between the two peoples have always been an inexhaustible source of cooperation. Media cooperation undoubtedly plays an important role in strengthening these connections.
At the high-level forum on cultural exchanges, the China Media Group (CMG) and its Argentine media partners have announced a China-Argentina Culture Week and other cooperation projects.
The rapid development of China-Argentina relations over the past 50 years is also a reflection of flourishing relations that China has maintained with many Latin American nations. Exchanges between China and Latin American countries have steadily increased in recent years. In the first seven months of 2022, China's exports to Latin America reached 947.76 billion yuan (roughly 133 billion in U.S. dollars), a year-on-year increase of 21.4 percent; while its imports were 885.42 billion yuan, an increase of 8 percent.
Behind all these dazzling achievements are the solidarity, cooperation and common development between China and Latin American countries.
