Storyline

The ongoing 14th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition (Airshow China) in Zhuhai City in south China's Guangdong Province has displayed models of manned rocket for China's next-phase lunar mission.

With a takeoff weight of 2,100 tonnes, the new launch vehicle is 90 meters long. It has a lunar-transfer-orbit capacity of 27 tonnes and a near-Earth orbit capacity of 70 tonnes.

According to the China National Space Administration, China approved the fourth phase of its lunar exploration program, the main goal of which is to carry out scientific explorations on the moon's south pole and set up a fundamental type of lunar scientific research station.

The fourth phase will be carried out in three steps, with the Chang'e-6, Chang'e-7 and Chang'e-8 probes being launched before 2030.

"Our current largest carrier rocket, the Long March-5B, can launch 8.2 tons into the earth-to-moon transfer orbit. We need 27 tons to land on the moon. We are working to increase the width and thrust of our current rockets," Liu Bing, deputy director designer of Long March-5B, China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALVT).

The rocket to carry astronauts is expected to make its maiden flight in 2027, according to Zhao Xinguo, another official with the CALVT at the ongoing airshow.

In addition to the manned rocket, the airshow also displayed a model of a new heavy-lift rocket with greater carrying capacities, which it is capable of sending a payload of 50 tonnes to the Earth-moon transfer orbit, and 150 tonnes to the near-Earth orbit.

"The super heavy-lift rocket is 10 meters wide and over 100 meters tall. Its huge lift will significantly improve our ability to explore space," he said.
