Storyline

China's Shenzhou-14 astronauts completed their third round of extravehicular activities (EVAs) on Thursday, with spectacular footage showing crew members embarking on a five-hour-long spacewalk high above the Earth as construction of China's Tiangong Space Station continues.

It was the first round of EVAs for the crew since the assembly of the station's basic T-shape configuration earlier this month, and the third overall spacewalk since the current crew began their mission in June.

Chinese astronauts Chen Dong and Cai Xuzhe donned their spacesuits and exited the module to conduct the key external tasks, while their colleague Liu Yang stayed on-board to support her crew-mates from inside the module.

The China Manned Space Agency confirmed that the spacewalk was successfully completed at 16:50 (Beijing Time) on Thursday, after lasting for around five and a half hours in total.

During the EVAs, Chen and Cai worked together to install a connection "bridge" between the three modules that could assist astronauts when crawling outside the module and better stabilize the station's T-shaped structure.

Cai, who only made his first spacewalk in September, attempted the first cross-module walk using this newly-built bridge.

The astronauts also lifted and fixed a panoramic camera outside the Wentian lab module and added a special mounted assistance handle on the small robotic arm.

The performance of the crew and the coordination with the ground team was later hailed as "perfect" by officials.

"This time, Shenzhou-14 set a record of carrying out extravehicular activities (EVAs) in one mission. It should be said that the performance of the crew as a whole was perfect, and the coordination between the space and the ground was also very coordinated, and the entire mission was successfully completed," said Chen Shanguang, deputy chief designer of the China Manned Space Program.

This is the seventh round of EVAs to be conducted as part of the China's space station construction process, with the previous two crewed missions also fulfilling key tasks.

The Shenzhou-14 astronauts successfully completed their first two rounds of EVAs in September, both from the airlock cabin of the Wentian lab module. The first EVAs lasted about seven hours, while the second lasted about five hours.

The three Shenzhou-14 crew members were sent to orbit in June to begin a record-breaking six-month stint in space, the longest duration for any Chinese manned mission.

As planned, the Shenzhou-14 crew will welcome the arrival of the Shenzhou-15 manned spacecraft at the space station later this month. The Shenzhou-15 crew members will join the Shenzhou-14 colleagues to complete the space station's first-ever crew handover.
