And the fact that we're not treating it as such, or even not recognizing it as such is only going to make this emergency prone to just a more dire strait."

The impact caused by long COVID, especially the high degree of disabilities makes it the greatest modern mass-disabling event in history, a long COVID patient from the United States said.
According to the data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 24 million adults in the U.S. suffer from the after-effects of long COVID. Research by the Brookings Institute in August shows that around four million Americans lost their jobs due to the after-effects of long COVID.
Charlie McComb, 32, is a long-COVID patient living in San Francisco. After being infected with COVID-19 in 2020, Charlie developed persistent breathing difficulties, fatigue, and memory loss and became disabled.
In an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN), McComb talked about how his life has changed with long COVID, and how its prevalence and severity could result in a greater public health disaster.
"I rely on my partner as a full-time caretaker to make me food, to help do my laundry, do all the cooking and cleaning. I can only really bathe myself, but even in the shower, I can't stand up and I haven't stood up in a shower since 2020," McComb said.
In his opinion, the U.S. government’s failure to issue a public health warning against long COVID has led to the public's ignorance and could possibly cause a greater public health disaster.
"With the rates of long COVID that we're seeing, and the very high degree of disability that correlates with long COVID, it's unequivocally, it's the greatest modern mass-disabling event in history. And the fact that we're not treating it as such, or even not recognizing it as such is only going to make this emergency prone to just a more dire strait," McComb said.
He believes authorities need to disclose the impacts of long COVID to the public due to the severity of the health crisis.
"We are now almost three years into this pandemic. Every government on earth knows how prevalent and severe long COVID is. And if they are choosing not to distribute that information, it is deliberate misinformation on the risk of infection," McComb said.
