The Iranian Foreign Ministry stressed Wednesday that Iran's negotiations on the 2015 nuclear deal with the United States are continuing while differences remain.
Speaking at a press briefing on the negotiations related to the Iran nuclear deal, U.S.-Iran relations and regional situation, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that despite the recent unconstructive stance of the U.S. and the three European countries - Britain, France and Germany, Iran has still engaged in indirect diplomatic talks with the U.S. on the nuclear issue through the European Union and other coordinators.
The Iranian top diplomat said that there are still three main differences between the U.S. and Iran to be worked out - resolving the remaining issues between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); receiving guarantees on the economic benefits of the deal for Iran; and removing the extension of sanctions to third parties.
Abdollahian said Iran's mistrust of the U.S. had been exacerbated by the volatile position of Washington, even as Europe was mediating the main differences.
"Although [Iran and the U.S.] are exchanging information through diplomatic channels, some U.S. officials continue their hypocritical stance in statement to the media. I hope that under Iran's realistic attitude and in a way that best suits Iran's national interests, a good, strong and sustainable agreement can be reached by all sides in the last step of the negotiation," he said.
Iran signed the nuclear deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), with world powers in July 2015, agreeing to put some curbs on its nuclear program in return for the removal of the sanctions on the country. The U.S., however, pulled out of the deal in 2018 and reimposed its sanctions against Iran, prompting the latter to reduce some of its nuclear commitments under the deal.
The talks on the JCPOA's revival began in April 2021 in Vienna. No breakthrough had been achieved after the latest round of talks in early August.
