"You treat the foundation with this rubbery paint. You make the first layer with concrete then you start building bricks. You build a couple of rows of bricks per day. Then you reinforce the roof part and that's where the roof will be resting on."

"It would be impossible to rebuild this community if we relied on our own resources. Our community produces agricultural products, but this year we only planted 30 percent of our usual crops because of the conflict, so we don't have any income. Our community needs building materials. But there is a severe lack of funds."

Storyline

Hundreds of volunteers in Ukraine have been helping locals to rebuild homes destroyed in the conflict with Russia, bringing hope to stricken residents who were on the brink of homelessness.

Dominik Bibko and his friends are among the volunteers who have been rebuilding houses that were burnt down when Russian soldiers entered the northern village of Lukashivka in March.

Bibko belongs to a charity named "Repair Together"- a group of several hundred Ukrainians and foreign nationals who build homes for free.

Their tasks include removing all the debris, setting the foundation, laying bricks, and fitting the roof. It's a demanding job, especially in freezing temperatures. But the volunteers forge ahead as they are committed to rebuilding this community.

"You treat the foundation with this rubbery paint. You make the first layer with concrete then you start building bricks. You build a couple of rows of bricks per day. Then you reinforce the roof part and that's where the roof will be resting on," said Bibko.

Olga Varenyk had lived in her house in Lukashivka for 32 years, then saw it burn to the ground. She's now staying in a small cottage until her new home is finished.

"I am grateful from the bottom of my heart to all the volunteers, and their parents who brought up such kind, sensible children. They found our village, which is not even on the map. They came and helped me. I'm so grateful," said Varenyk.

There's a lot to rebuild here - but not enough funds.

"It would be impossible to rebuild this community if we relied on our own resources. Our community produces agricultural products, but this year we only planted 30 percent of our usual crops because of the conflict, so we don't have any income. Our community needs building materials. But there is a severe lack of funds," said Olena Shvydka, head of the Ivanivka Territorial Community.

Many people here still have no home to return to. For now, all they can do is pray.
