Search and rescue teams in villages in western Indonesia have been sparing no efforts in looking for the missing people and providing aftercares amid bad weather conditions following the earthquake on Monday afternoon.
The 5.6-magnitude quake struck at 13:21 Jakarta time on Monday with the epicenter at 10 km southwest of the district of Cianjur in West Java province, and a depth of 10 km, the meteorological, climatological and geophysical agency said.
The death toll of the earthquake increased to 310, and 24 others were still missing, according to officials with the country's National Agency for Disaster Management on Friday.
Villagers in the district described their lives have been changed in an instant moment on that afternoon, with the severe quake razing their homes to the ground without any foreboding.
"I saw my friends stained in blood. One of them had head hurting and another with severe chest injuries," said resident Ida Rubi'a.
The devastating earthquake also triggered massive landslides in the village, destroying roads and tearing down power lines.
The National Agency for Disaster Management reported the tremor destroyed 56,311 houses and displaced 62,545 residents in Cianjur district.
"Nothing was saved. This is the state of my house. I was only thinking of my own safety at the time," said Rubi'a.
Rescue and aftercare operations have been carried out in tough conditions. There are at least 6,000 personnel on ground, however, the heavy rain and aftershocks have hampered their progress.
"We have no other choice but to use heavy equipment everyday for evacuation because the thickness of the mud is so deep. The constant rain also puts our ground team at risk and affects the evacuation process," said Jumaril, head of West Java's search and rescue agency.
