China and Cuba’s joint efforts to build a community with a shared future chart the course for deepening friendship between China and Latin American and Caribbean countries in the new era, said a China Media Group (CMG) commentary released on Saturday.
An edited English-language translation of the commentary is as follows:
Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese president, held talks Friday with visiting Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and Cuban president.
The two sides agreed in their meeting to continue strengthening the political guidance on the relationship between the two parties and the two countries, and continue deepening the special friendship between China and Cuba in the new era.
The China-Cuba community with a shared future is the first of its kind built by China and a Latin American and Caribbean country, which charts the course for the development of bilateral relations in the new era.
Although China and Cuba are far apart in distance, their friendship is firm. Cuba is the first country in the Western Hemisphere to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, and the two countries also follow the common path of socialism.
Diaz-Canel is the first Latin American and Caribbean head of state received by China since the 20th CPC National Congress held last month, which fully demonstrates that China-Cuba relations have become a model of solidarity and cooperation among socialist countries and sincere mutual assistance among developing countries.
During their meeting, President Xi reviewed the traditional friendship between China and Cuba, and emphasized that China has always placed China-Cuba relations in a special position in the overall diplomatic situation. Diaz-Canel said that developing relations with China is the top priority of Cuba's foreign policy. This conveys the message that both sides cherish traditional friendship and seek to enhance strategic mutual trust.
Cuba has been unilaterally sanctioned by the United States for a long time, coupled with the intrusion of the COVID-19 pandemic, and its development faces many challenges. The Eighth National Congress of the Cuban Communist Party held last year pledged to accelerate the construction of socialism.
The 20th CPC National Congress, which was held in October, emphasized the comprehensive progressing of modernization with Chinese characteristics, which has attracted attention from all walks of life in Cuba. Carlos Miguel Pereira, Cuban ambassador to China, said that the report to the 20th CPC National Congress contains valuable experience in socialist construction and is worthy of repeated study.
During their meeting, President Xi introduced the important achievements of the 20th CPC National Congress, and pointed out that the two parties should maintain close communication, strengthen exchanges and mutual learning, and build socialism in line with their actual conditions. Diaz-Canel said that Cuba will take China as a model, face challenges creatively, and achieve the goal of building socialism. This released a clear signal that the two sides will deepen practical cooperation and jointly promote socialist modernization.
At present, China is Cuba's largest trading partner in goods, and Cuba is China's second largest trading partner in the Caribbean. In 2021, the bilateral trade volume between China and Cuba increased by 7.2 percent; in the first three quarters of this year, the bilateral trade continued to grow, and China's imports from Cuba have achieved an increase of 18.1 percent.
China always supports Cuba in following a development path that suits its own conditions, and actively does justice to Cuba. Since 1992, China has voted in support of Cuba's resolution against the U.S. blockade at the UN General Assembly 30 times in a row.
The Cuban side firmly abides by the one-China principle, and supports the high-quality joint construction of the "Belt and Road", the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative. It has made joint speeches on behalf of dozens of countries on many occasions such as the UN Human Rights Council and the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly, to reject interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of human rights. This kind of firm mutual support is the proper meaning of jointly building a community with a shared future between the two countries.
The Cuban leader's visit to China this time has also opened up more space for China-Latin America cooperation. So far, 21 Latin American countries have signed Belt and Road cooperation documents with China.
Analysts say that the joint construction of a China-Cuba community with a shared future will play an exemplary role in Latin America and the Caribbean, and promote the better development of China-Latin America comprehensive cooperative partnership in the new era.
