"By the end of last year, China's population was 1,411.175 million (including the population of the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities as well as servicemen in active service, but excluding residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and expatriates living on the mainland), a decrease of 850,000 over the previous year. The number of newborns stood at 9.56 million, with the birth rate at 6.77 per 1,000 people, while the number of deaths reached 10.41 million, with the mortality rate at 7.37 per 1,000 people. China's overall population on the mainland was 1.41175 billion at the end of 2022, a drop of 850,000 from the end of 2021, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Tuesday.
"By the end of last year, China's population was 1,411.175 million (including the population of the 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities as well as servicemen in active service, but excluding residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and expatriates living on the mainland), a decrease of 850,000 over the previous year. The number of newborns stood at 9.56 million, with the birth rate at 6.77 per 1,000 people, while the number of deaths reached 10.41 million, with the mortality rate at 7.37 per 1,000 people. The overall natural population growth rate was negative 0.60 per 1,000 people," said Kang Yi, director of the National Bureau of Statistics.
In breakdown, the male population was 722.06 million, while the female population was 689.69 million, and the male-to-female ratio hit 104.69 (the female is 100), according to the NBS data.
The country's working-age population, those aged between 16 and 59, stood at 875.56 million, accounting for 62 percent of the total population, and the population aged 60 or above reached 280.04 million, accounting for 19.8 percent of the total, among which 209.78 million were aged 65 or above, accounting for 14.9 percent of the total population, the NBS said.
In addition, the permanent urban residents were 920.71 million, an increase of 6.46 million over the end of 2021, and the rural population stood at 491.04 million, a decrease of 7.31 million. The population living in urban areas represented 65.22 percent of the total, 0.50 percentage points higher than that at the end of 2021, the NBS data showed.
