Storyline


Many heads of the international agencies and foreign dignitaries have extended to the Chinese people their best wishes for the Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, which fell on Sunday.

Jan 22, 2023 marks the start of the New Year of the Rabbit, the fourth animal sign of the Chinese zodiac.

This year's Spring Festival, starting from Jan. 21 and culminating with the Lantern Festival on Feb 5, is being celebrated by Chinese around the globe with family reunions and traditional activities.

Gilbert F. Houngbo, director-general of the International Labour Organization, sent his Spring Festival greetings from Davos, Switzerland on Jan. 19 when he was attending the annual World Economic Forum.

"I want to use this opportunity to say happy new lunar year to all colleagues and the citizens, all that are celebrating the new year in China and elsewhere. Happy Rabbit New Year," said Houngbo.

On Jan 18, China's permanent delegation to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held a 2023 Chinese New Year reception at the organization's headquarters in Paris, France.

Among the attendees was Vladimir Ryabinin, executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and assistant director-general of UNESCO.

"I hope that the Year of the Rabbit will bring us peace and harmony in the world. So, on behalf of UNESCO, I wish you happiness. Very, very happy. So, that is my wish to Chinese people and people around the world," he said.

Sylvia Elizabeth Lucas, deputy chairperson of the National Council of Provinces in South Africa, highlighted the great achievements in all aspects made by the Chinese people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China when extending her best wishes for the Spring Festival.

"Happy New Year to the people of the People's Republic of China. I think it is very important for the people of China, because their Party has, ever since they started to develop over the past 10 to 20 years, they have made sure that there is a revolutionary boom in terms of changing the lives of the people of China," she said.

Ishmael Kalsakau, Prime Minister of Vanuatu and his wife also joined other world leaders in extending their best Chinese New Year message.

"Happy new year with the best wishes from the Republic of Vanuatu. Happy Spring Festival," said the couple.
