The seventh Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) was held Tuesday in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.
Officials from all 33 CELAC member countries, including more than 10 heads of state, attended the summit.
Upon the invitation of President Alberto Fernandez of Argentina, the rotating president of CELAC, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a video address at the summit, calling for greater solidarity and closer cooperation amid global challenges.
Newly inaugurated Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also attended the summit, marking the formal return of Latin America's largest country to the CELAC family after its temporary withdrawal in 2019.
Chairing the opening ceremony, Fernandez stressed the urgency of the integration of Latin America and the Caribbean in the face of the complex global situation.
"The world has undergone many changes. We must turn regional integration into actions that will push us to advance and progress," said Fernandez.
The purpose of the summit is to promote coordinated actions by CELAC member states amid current challenges and strengthen the voice of Latin America and the Caribbean on the global stage, according to the Argentine government.
Representatives of all CELAC member states also held a closed-door meeting on the day to discuss further promoting regional integration and other issues.
CELAC member states signed and issued the "Buenos Aires Declaration" at the summit, stressing their commitment to jointly safeguard the rights and interests of the people in the region and to accelerate the realization of regional integration.
Leaders and representatives from 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries declared in December 2011 to formally establish CELAC, aiming to promote regional integration in Latin America and enhance the voice of Latin American countries in the world.
