Streets were calm and no casualties or major structural damage was being reported following a 5.6 magnitude earthquake which hit southwest China's Sichuan Province in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The epicenter of the quake, which hit at 03:49, was 11 kilometers beneath the earth's surface in Luding County in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) said.
Following the earthquake, which scientists believe was an aftershock from a bigger quake last year, local traffic police checked roads, bridges, tunnels, road service areas, and toll gates for damage, with some reports of landslides along rural roads but no major disruptions.
Houses that were renovated after the 6.8-magnitude quake last September appear to have withstood the jolt, and tourists in the region for the Spring Festival holiday started to leave calmly on Thursday morning.
Rescuers have combed through Moxi, a town in Luding County, and found no injuries and casualties.
