Storyline

China's passenger transportation system takes multi-pronged measures to ensure the surging number of travelers safely return to the cities where they work and live, with the Spring Festival holiday ending on Friday.

By Thursday, the country's railway, road, water and civil aviation services had handled more than 700 million passenger trips, official data showed.

The Taiyuan South Railway Station in north China's Shanxi Province became much more crowded on Friday, filled with workers and students returning to cities where their colleges or companies are located.

This key railway pivot in the provincial capital of Taiyuan was expected to see 62,000 passengers on Friday, local railway operator said. Major destinations include Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai.

China Railway Taiyuan Group has increased transport capacity by adding extra night high-speed trains and double heading trains that are pulled by two locomotives. All-day patrol inspections are conducted to ensure normal operation of all equipment. Green channels are available for passengers to board trains leaving soon.

With sub-zero weather outdoors, the railway station also prepared emergency supply boxes containing face masks, tissues, and warm stickers for passengers in need. The vulnerable groups such as the old, the disabled and pregnant women can fetch special tags which allow them to easily get help from the railway staff.

The city of Shenzhen of south China's Guangdong Province catered to more than 6.7 million passengers in the first 20 days of the Spring Festival Travel Rush, a volume up by almost 50 percent compared with the previous travel rush season.

The Shenzhen North Railway Station on Friday saw more than 292,000 arriving passengers, a historical high record.

Road trips in China on Wednesday reached a historical high for the Spring Festival travel rush, with over 50 million trips on a single day, a year-on-year growth of 33.2 percent. Traffic authorities across the country are working around the clock, making utmost efforts to maximize the smooth traffic flow on the trunk roads.

The Nanjing Baguazhou Yangtze River Bridge, a key crossing on the Nanjing-Luoyang Expressway, has opened all its toll gates for people driving themselves home, as all highway tolls are waived during the week-long Spring Festival holiday.

According to the forecast of authorities in east China's Jiangsu Province, the expressway network could have seen about 3.35 million vehicles at exits, approaching the historical peak.

By air, a total of 7.32 million estimated passenger trips were made over the past week, an increase of 93 percent year on year.

The Haikou Meilan International Airport was expected to handle 533 flights carrying more than 84,000 passengers flying away from the popular holiday resort on Friday. The airport has organized volunteers and set a 24-hour hot line to serve the travelers.

In Beijing, the Capital Airport planned to handle 118,000 passengers with 907 flights on Friday. The Daxing Airport was scheduled to carry out 789 flights, with an estimated throughput of 112,500 passengers.
