China's cinema box office revenue for the week-long Spring Festival holiday had passed 6.5 billion yuan (about 958 million U.S. dollars) by Friday afternoon, official data from the China Film Administration showed.
The figure exceeded the box office earnings of 6.04 billion yuan during the 2022 Spring Festival.
Chinese-made blockbusters have led the box office. Historical epic movie Full River Red by famed director Zhang Yimou and science fiction film The Wandering Earth II were among the most popular.
Statistics show that from Jan 21 to Friday, 30 percent of cinema goers went in groups of three persons or more, highlighting the popularity of movie going as a family activity during the Chinese New Year.
The proportion of movie goers under 20 and 40 and above increased significantly, reaching 7 percent and 20 percent respectively.
"The movie market is off to a great start, and we expect 2023 to be a roaring year for the entire movie market," said Dong Wenxin, manager of a cinema in Jinan City of east China's Shandong Province.
