Storyline

Many residents in the quake-hit Hatay province in Türkiye are yearning for help, as their family or friends were still buried in the rubble as of Wednesday, according to a CGTN stringer.

An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale jolted southern Türkiye in the early hours of February 6, followed by another 7.6-magnitude quake at 1:24 p.m., causing heavy casualties in the country and neighboring country Syria. More than 11,000 people are confirmed to have been killed as of Wednesday.

CGTN stringer Neyran Elden on Wednesday drove to the hard-hit Hatay province to record the latest situation there.

According to the official figures, Hatay province recorded the highest death toll with at least 872 casualties, along with the highest number of collapsed buildings. People said the earthquake has ruined the city and their life.

"The entire city, everything is destroyed. There is no market, no water, and no electricity," said resident Dilek Daplan.

Local woman Çiğdem Özcan said while crying that her stepson and daughter, who is pregnant, are still missing, but the rescue workers could not get close enough to find them.

"My daughter and stepson are buried in the rubble. They both just got married. My daughter is one month pregnant. There is no support, and we are still waiting. Their bedrooms were on the other side, but the rescue workers couldn't get close enough as there was another building on the other side. We are waiting here, capable of doing nothing to help. We need help. Please help us. I came from Ankara," she said.

The stringer said she saw bodies in the streets on pavements next to rubble because there is no place for funeral vehicles.
