Storyline


China has become the world's largest oil refiner, according to data of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation on Thursday.

With 32 oil refineries having annual output above 10 million tons and the total refining capacity reaching 920 million tons a year, China has become the top refiner for the first time in 2023, according to the federation.

China's petroleum and chemical industry maintained a stable operation in the past year, with rapid increase of investments flowing to oil and gas exploitation.

In 2022, China's crude oil output stood at 205 million tons, up 2.9 percent year on year. The production of natural gas was 217.79 billion cubic meters, up 6.4 percent year on year.

"Last year, our crude oil output grew for four consecutive years and the annual increment of natural gas maintained above 10 billion cubic meters for six consecutive years , making great contribution to our country's energy security and bumper grain harvest for 19 consecutive years," said Fu Xiangsheng, vice president of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation.

The industry also showed strong momentum in high-quality development by lifting the level of technology and core competitiveness.
