"Looking forward, our work will prioritize maintaining the sound momentum of 5G's development, and the specific measures can be summarized in three aspects - construction, applications, and research. In terms of construction, it means we will establish more 5G base stations, as we are going to set up 600,000 new 5G base stations this year, which means there will be a total of over 2.9 million base stations in China by the end of 2023. Most cities are already covered by 5G, and we will promote 5G network coverage to greater width. For rural areas, 5G base stations have covered all prefecture-level cities, and we are going to ensure more in-depth coverage especially in industrial zones."

"As for application, we plan to further expand 5G application and implement the '5G plus' action plan. As I mentioned just now, the application scale should be expanded in the broad categories of national economy. Meanwhile, we will focus on the manufacturing sector. As it is known to all, the empowerment of the 5G plus industrial internet is significant for the manufacturing sector to achieve leapfrog development. We are going to build more than 10,000 5G factories as a part of the 14th Five-Year (2021-2025) Plan."

So we are working on summarizing and sharing the 5G-related experience and helped the sector establish the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group. We will work to promote greater synergy between industry, academia, research, and application, enhance international cooperation and speed up the research and development of 6G."

Storyline

China will further expand 5G network coverage to greater width and depth, while pushing forward the research and development of 6G technology, said Jin Zhuanglong, Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Sunday.

Speaking in an interview after the opening meeting of the first session of the 14th National People's Congress in Beijing, Jin said more than 2.9 million 5G base stations in total will be in service across the country by the end of 2023.

"As for application, we plan to further expand 5G application and implement the '5G plus' action plan. We are going to build more than 10,000 5G factories as a part of the 14th Five-Year (2021-2025) Plan," the minister continued.

In 2021, the MIIT, together with nine other departments, issued a three-year action plan (2021-2023) aimed at coordinating 5G integration and application, and fostering new drivers of economic and social development.

Jin said the ministry will review and promote the successful practices of 5G application to push forward the progress of 6G development.

"[Thirdly, in terms of research,] by bringing the roles of the government, enterprises and research institutions into full play, we have witnessed encouraging results. So we are working on summarizing and sharing the 5G-related experience and helped the sector establish the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group.
