Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva attended an inauguration ceremony of the new head of the New Development Bank (NDB) in Shanghai on Thursday, a day after he arrived in China for a state visit.
The NDB is a multilateral development bank established by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). It aims to mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets and developing countries.
Dilma Rousseff, an economist and former Brazilian president, assumed office on the day as New Development Bank (NDB) president.
Speaking in her first pubic statement as president, Rousseff stressed the importance of this multilateral bank, saying that multilateral banks, in particular NDB, are important in supporting developing countries in addressing their own economic, social and environmental needs.
She also noted that becoming the president is giving her a great opportunity to do more for BRICS, emerging markets and developing countries as well as her own country.
During Lula's current state visit to China, which will last from April 12 to 15, the two countries are expected to promote the upgrading of mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation in various fields, aiming to inject more positive energy into advancing solidarity and cooperation of developing countries and jointly addressing global challenges.
