China has been Turkmenistan's largest trading partner since 2011. Turkmenistan is the largest supplier of onshore gas to China, and a major natural gas source for the four lines of the Central Asia-China pipeline.

The China-Central Asia Summit is scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Xian, which gathers the heads of state of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The presidents will review the development of China-Central Asia relations and exchange views on China-Central Asia mechanism building, cooperation in various fields and major international and regional issues of common interest. They will also sign important political documents.

It is the first major diplomatic activity that China hosts this year, and also the first summit held offline by the heads of state of the six countries since the establishment of diplomatic ties 31 years ago. The event is a historic milestone in the development of relations between China and Central Asian countries, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Xian is a historic city that was founded around 3,100 years ago. Formerly known as Changan, it is the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, which saw flourishing interactions between China and Central Asia.
