China and the Solomon Islands on Monday afternoon jointly announced the official establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership featuring mutual respect and common development for a new era.
The announcement was made during a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and visiting Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands Manasseh Sogavare in Beijing.
Xi said that China and the Solomon Islands are trustworthy friends and reliable brothers to each other.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the friendly cooperation between the two countries has caught up and taken the lead in China's relations with Pacific island countries, setting an example of solidarity, cooperation and joint development between large and small countries and between developing countries, Xi said.
Facts have proven that the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the Solomon Islands conforms to the trend of the times, the international trend and is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples, Xi added.
According to the Chinese president, China is willing to work with the Solomon Islands to strengthen strategic communication, deepen cooperation in various fields, push for steady and sustained progress of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries and deliver more benefits to the two peoples.
Xi stressed that China highly appreciates the Solomon Islands' firm adherence to the one-China principle and supports the Solomon Islands in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and development interests as well as its independent choice of development path.
China stays committed to running its own affairs well, and will always be a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of the international order, Xi said.
China is ready to share with the Solomon Islands the development opportunities brought about by the Chinese modernization, enhance the synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and the Solomon Islands' Development Strategy 2035, promote practical cooperation in various fields, and expand imports of the Solomon Islands' competitive products, so as to help the Solomon Islands achieve development, revitalization and long-term stability, according to Xi.
He also said that China supports more Chinese enterprises to invest and operate in the Solomon Islands and will continue to provide economic and technical assistance for the Solomon Islands without political strings attached.
Xi urged the two sides to expand friendly exchanges in medical care, education and other fields.
Xi added that China supports the Solomon Islands in hosting the 17th Pacific Games in 2023.
Xi said that as China and Pacific island countries are all developing countries, they should strengthen mutual help and assistance under the framework of South-South cooperation.
Xi expounded on China's policy toward Pacific island countries: China fully respects the sovereignty and independence of Pacific island countries, and upholds the equality of all countries, big or small. China fully respects the will of Pacific island countries and pursues extensive consultation, joint contribution, shared benefits and win-win results. China fully respects the cultural traditions of Pacific island countries, and adheres to harmony in diversity and shared beauty of diverse cultures. China fully respects the unity and self-reliance of Pacific island countries, and supports them in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, contributing to the building of a peaceful, harmonious, secure, inclusive and prosperous Blue Pacific.
Understanding that Pacific island countries face severe challenges from climate change, China stands ready to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with them in terms of meteorological services, disaster prevention and mitigation, and clean energy to help them implement the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Xi said.
China is willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with the Solomon Islands, uphold true multilateralism, safeguard international fairness and justice, jointly oppose the Cold War mentality and hegemonism, and safeguard peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, Xi added.
For his part, Sogavare said that it is the right choice made by the Solomon Islands to establish diplomatic ties with China.
Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, bilateral relationship has yielded fruitful outcomes, and China has become the Solomon Islands' largest infrastructure partner and reliable development partner, he said.
The Solomon Islands highly appreciates and supports the China-proposed Global Development Initiative (GDI), the Global Security Initiative (GSI) and the Global Civilization Initiative, the prime minister said.
He said that China's achievements in poverty reduction deserve the admiration of and offer experience to the rest of the world.
Solomon Islands firmly upholds the one-China principle, he added.
Sogavare said his country is willing to keep close high-level exchanges with China, strengthen cooperation in areas including trade, investment, cultural and people-to-people, and sub-national exchanges, jointly cope with global challenges such as climate change, and push forward the steady progress of the comprehensive strategic partnership.
The Solomon Islands opposes any actions targeting or containing China's development, he added.
After the meeting, the two sides issued a joint statement on establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership featuring mutual respect and common development for a new era.
Sogavare is on an official visit to China slated from Sunday to Saturday, at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
