Storyline

Chinese astronauts will be able to explore the surface of the moon using a manned lunar rover which will be able to collect samples within a range of 10 kilometers, a senior Chinese space engineer said on Wednesday.

The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) has previously announced it is pressing ahead with the goal of landing astronauts on the moon before 2030, with a new preliminary plan released on Wednesday giving more details of the historic mission.

Zhang Hailian, deputy chief designer with the CMSA, introduced more of the specific plans at an aerospace industry forum in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, on Wednesday.

He said Chinese researchers are working on the development of the Long March-10 carrier rocket, a new generation of manned spacecraft, and other key equipment including the lunar lander, rover, and a new spacesuit as part of the lunar exploration mission.

Zhang explained that after arriving on the lunar surface, the astronauts will be able to travel using a specially built rover. The manned lunar rover will weigh about 200 kilograms and can carry two crew members.

"After the lunar lander delivers the two astronauts, the lunar rover, and the relevant loads to the surface of the moon, the astronauts will get inside the lunar rover to carry out lunar sampling and corresponding experiments within a range of 10 kilometers," said the engineer.

Zhang said that in addition to the manned lunar rover, China also plans to launch a lunar mobile laboratory with large-scale mobile capabilities. It will be able to operate unmanned on the lunar surface for a considerable time, and will be equipped to support the short-term stay of astronauts.

"Afterwards, we will launch the corresponding modules and assemble them into a lunar scientific research and experimental station, which has the ability to stay in the medium term. We are also considering using the in-situ resources of the lunar surface to make lunar surface facilities, and further expand the functions of the scientific research and experimental station. This is only a preliminary idea, and further demonstration of this scheme is needed at a later stage," said Zhang.
