Storyline

A 16-year-old Chinese boy broke the Guinness World Records for doing 374 skips in one minute, 26 more than the previous record held by a Japanese for a decade.

Zhou Qi, a junior high student in east China's Zhejiang Province, completed the astonishing number of skips on April 30, 2023, and received his Guinness Records certificate recently.

"The [Guinness World Records] certificate was sent to my home, so my family was the first to know. I also shared this achievement with my friends," he said.

As a member of his school's rope skipping team, Zhou has been spending his summer vacation training together with his team members. Each member shares the dream of breaking records, he said.

"We all share a common goal. For example, many of us in the team want to achieve an individual record, such as breaking a world record," Zhou said.

As one of the most talented members in the team, Zhou has kept practicing with a steel rope to improve his skills, which enhances his endurance but gives higher risk of injury.

Zhou's efforts paid off well as he has won multiple provincial and national events, including a top-spot for the highest number of skips in three minutes at a national competition in 2019.

"He has clear goals and he always trains very hard after school. And on weekends when he has some time, he would train even harder," said Chen Jiangmao, Zhou's teammate.
